Your challenge
CBC Victoria is looking for a Reporter-Editor. In this
position you will be the morning news editor and presenter on Victoria’s
morning program On The Island. As a Reporter-Editor, you will perform
reporting and editorial assignments for digital, radio and other media, which
involve the gathering, writing and presentation of information. Work is
governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards.
Function:
Performs reporting and editorial assignments related to the
gathering, writing and presentation of program material for digital, radio and
other media.
The successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist
and presenter.

policies and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but
there is latitude for initiative and independent judgement. There may be
opportunity to co-ordinate the work of others and close co-operation with the
program unit is essential.
Key Tasks:
Decides which stories and elements should be included in a
newscast, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition
from one element to another.
Delivers newscasts, news briefs, breaking news and analysis
on air.
Develops and maintains contacts with a variety of sources.
Conducts analysis of facts and information gathered and
draws conclusions or raises issues requiring further investigation.
Writes for digital platforms as required.
Prepares and writes scripts, continuity and headlines.
Gathers and reports information from various sources.
Contributes ideas or program content.
Critically edit material written by others.
Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is
available.
Perform other production or administrative tasks associated
with the smooth functioning of the station.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following experience and skills:
University or college degree in journalism or a related discipline.
Three years of directly related experience in journalism that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.
A valid driver's license is essential.
Demonstrated ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources.
Demonstrated ability to write and prepare content for news, current affairs and digital platforms.
Demonstrated experience with a CMS (Content Management System).
Demonstrated ability to provide live on-air reports, debriefs, script-clips, interviews and analysis of complex events on all platforms.
Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of presentation forms from concise news items to longer form radio journalism and ability to prepare and write scripts, headlines and items for documentaries and current affairs programs.
An ability to generate original and innovative material.
An ability to work independently as well as with members of the production team.
An ability to work effectively under pressure and deadlines.
An aptitude for self-development and personal growth.
Willingness to work cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and vetting.
Strong technical and production skills, and an aptitude for computer editing and mixing.
Knowledge and understanding of the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
