Aquatic Services is currently accepting applications for their external job registry for future part-time casual and call-in Aquatic Lifeguard positions. Lifeguards perform supervision, education and prevention while guarding the pool and deck environment. Instructors provide swimming lesson instruction that follow he Red Cross Swim program which we offer and instruction of the delivery of aqua fitness. Both positions are educated to assist in the delivery of our policies and procedures with in the recreation department and the whole municipality. About Recreation and Culture Services: The Recreation and Culture Services (RCS) section includes Recreation Programs, Aquatic Programs, Special Populations, Marketing, the Chatham Cultural Centre which includes Thames Art Gallery, ARTspace, Kiwanis Theatre, Box Office, Chatham Kent Museum, Ridge House, Milner House and other heritage sites. Recreation and Culture Services provides high quality recreation and cultural programs/services and opportunities to residents and visitors of Chatham-Kent.
What does an Aquatic Lifeguard do? Delivers safe enjoyable aqua fitness classes, swimming lessons and coached programs following guidelines and expectations for positive outcomes; delivers/performs guarding to an NLS standard guarding swims and rentals following policies and Health and safety standards for prevention of injury; performs as accident preventers, rescuers, public relations officers and administrators; maintenance of aquatic facility as scheduled; ensures all lifesaving equipment is maintained, available and in proper working order to implement trained rescue procedures; performs high level of First Aid; following all set emergency procedures; reports known or potential hazards, maintenance concerns and unsafe conditions to the Coordinator, Aquatic Services; performs administrative duties: pool log, attendance, accident/incident reports; provides personal attention and care to all community users; promotes and implements policies and procedures, rules and regulations that govern a person using the aquatic facilities; assists with birthday parties, front desk attendant and other shifts as required.
What qualifications are we looking for? Because of the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be at least 16 years of age. Lifeguards must maintain required certifications; possess knowledge of/ experience with injury prevention practices, as well as health and safety practices; knowledge of communications to be demonstrated during shift to patrons and staff; able to demonstrate our policy and procedures during shift; able to demonstrate competency to report concerns in a timely fashion with follow-up; demonstrated commitment to working safely; able to react quickly and follow standard processes in emergencies. The following experience would be an asset: previous Lifeguard/Aquatic experience working at a public pool or other environment (i.e. beach lifeguard, private pool lifeguard, camp lifeguard, etc.); previous aquatic leadership/supervision experience an asset; experience in dealing/working with community user demographics (preschool, youth, adult, senior).
The following certifications are required:
· Current Standard First Aid/CPR certificate
· Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor [WSI] certificate
· Current LSSC National Lifeguard Service Award required
· High Five Principles of Healthy Childhood Development certificate
The following certifications would be an asset:
· Current LSSC LifeSaving Instructor certificate
· CALA certification (Canadian Aquafitness Leaders Alliance Inc.) (www.calainc.org)
· WaterART certification(WaterART Fitness International) (www.waterart.org)
· LSSC Examiner Status.

Hours of Work:
Part-time positions working daytime, evenings, and weekends as required. Duties will be assigned by the Aquatic Coordinator. Applicants must be available on short notice to work days, evenings, and weekends as required; for up to 24 hours per week. Positions are located at the Gable Rees Rotary Pool and the Wallaceburg Sydenham Pool.
The wage range for this position is $14.93 to $16.23 per hour (based on grade 3B of the 2016 non-union part-time
