A Strategic Advisor of Aboriginal Tax Advisor identifies and analyses tax policy issues, develops policy options (including First Nations taxation treaty mandates), evaluates implications and provides high quality and comprehensive objective advice and recommendations that are effectively communicated to the Minister of Finance and senior management. The Advisor ensures advice is based on sound research and analysis and that government policy decisions are accurately implemented through legislation, regulations, and negotiated agreements. The Advisor also provides written and verbal briefings for the Minister and senior management and work with considerable independence to lead major projects and project teams. Unique to this position, a Strategic Advisor of Aboriginal Tax develops First Nation taxation policy options and treaty mandates, establishes and maintains strong working relationships with a number of BC First Nations and represents the ministry at First Nations treaty negotiations.
The Strategic Advisor of Aboriginal Tax advisor requires knowledge of various provincial taxes and has the ability to evaluate potential changes to the tax system using tax policy principles. The Advisor requires an understanding of the legislative process and how relevant legislation is applied as well as an understanding of the BC treaty process. The Advisor must be able to identify the implications of policy decisions for a diverse range of stakeholders, including provincial or local government agencies, business or investment community, First Nations, and other interest groups.

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
- Post-secondary degree in relevant discipline (e.g., economics, law, finance, commerce, public administration), graduate degree preferred.
- Experience participating in negotiations or consultations with First Nations.
- Demonstrated experience in public policy analysis / development. Experience in First Nations and/or taxation policy analysis / development preferred.
- Experience with drafting legislation or First Nations treaties and treaty related agreements preferred.
- Experience providing advice and recommendations to senior government officials in both written and verbal form.
- Familiarity and experience with First Nations treaty processes and issues applicable to First Nations taxation and/or fiscal negotiations.
- Familiarity and experience with property taxation in a First Nations context preferred.
