As host of Ottawa Morning, you help listeners in the national capital get out of bed, out the door and onto the city’s roads with all of the information they need to be ready for their day.
You are committed to staying connected – with the news of the day, with your listeners and with your team – even after the microphone is turned off at the end of each show. You appreciate that Ottawa is more than Parliament Hill, but you know that the people on Parliament Hill are among your listeners.
You are a smart journalist with a competitive spirit. You are naturally curious, and know how to help bring guests’ stories to life. Your interests are wide-ranging and you connect easily with people from all walks of life. You examine all situations from a variety of viewpoints, and listen deeply. You thrive in a team environment, and love to experiment with new ways to meet program and station goals.
You must have the integrity and self-confidence to bring our programming to life. You think on your feet, shine in the spotlight and aspire to inform, entertain and enlighten our audience.
This is a one-year temporary role.
Contributes to the planning, design and organization of program within the context that the program is typically highly formatted; ensures the preparation of material for broadcast. May assume production responsibility for a program or segments of a program.
Proposes program ideas, suggests and lines up guests or interviewees, prepares background notes and questions, interviews on or off air, and provides narration and linking continuity between program segments.
Interacts extemporaneously with program participants such as on-air colleagues, guests and interviewees, members of the audience and phone-in callers.
Maintains his/her subject matter expertise in fields relevant to the focus of the program(s).
Participates in public and/or community relations activities as appropriate, to promote the program(s) and/or the Corporation.
Reads newscasts and news bulletins.
Engages directly with the audience through social media as required.
Gathers audio and visual material in the field and packages it to share with the audience on any required platforms.
As required, performs the following tasks:
Act as master of ceremonies, narrator or interviewer on variety, quiz, disc or other programs;
Voice continuity for programs;
Conduct research using a variety of sources;
Edit program material;
As required, may perform any other task associated with the function of Announcer.
A university degree in a field relevant to the position or a combination of education and work experience relevant to the position.
Proven journalism skills, strong news judgment, excellent general knowledge.
Strong on-air performance and proven interview skills.
An understanding of the city that includes what happens on Parliament Hill and how they directly affect our audience.
A track record of talking to principal characters in stories that matter to the audience.
Engaging and intelligent on-air presence, showing a wide emotional range.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Exceptional ability to write for radio.
A thorough understanding of and experience with social media tools.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an understanding of the changing face of Ottawa.
Sense of humour.
A broad range of interests.
Curiosity and a genuine interest in telling 'real people' stories.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Good judgment and story sense.
Ability to collaborate with the producer to ensure that the show meets its goals.
Comfortable with French pronunciations.
Bilingualism, while not required, is considered an asset.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
