One of Alberta’s top employers, NAIT offers excellent personal, family, health, and well-being benefits, professional development opportunities, and an enviable environment of professional engagement and dynamism guided by a clear set of values (the NAIT way).
Learning and Teaching Commons (LTC) provides support to all staff at NAIT, with a primary focus on students and instructors. LTC also supports NAIT researchers; the Department of Continuing, International and Corporate Education (DCICE); and the general public through the provision of library services. LTC is a key department in positioning NAIT as a leading polytechnic throughout developing and sharing best practice in polytechnic education in Alberta, Canada and around the world.
The Executive Director of LTC reports to the Vice President Academic. The position is responsible for overseeing the work of NAIT’s Learning and Teaching Commons (LTC), a department with approximately 160 staff including NASA, AUPE, MAE and casual employees, and a budget of approximately 7 million dollars. The position focuses on providing educational leadership from three perspectives: Operational, NAIT-wide, and provincially/nationally/internationally.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership - the position provides high level oversight of 3 departmental work teams: Library Services, Teaching Services and Learning Services. The Executive Director of LTC ensures that the LTC operational plan is aligned to NAIT’s vision and strategic plan while seeking to collaborate across functional areas to ensure the highest level of support possible while also ensuring effective use of NAIT resources. Operational leadership requires continual leadership of educational quality assurance within NAIT.
NAIT-wide leadership - the position is responsible for collaboratively leading quality education and change-related initiatives on behalf of the institution (for example, NAIT’s move to adopt leading copyright practices; NAIT’s adoption of leadership training for leaders of instructional practice) and collaboratively leading discussions on enhancing the student learning experience (for example, the use and number of student practice places; the development of a system to house and access coursepacks; consulting on and supporting the planning of learning spaces in CAT). Some initiatives start within LTC as and are based on engagement and prioritization that LTC s conducts with members of the NAIT community. Other initiatives that require LTC strategic leadership come from engagement and prioritization that has been conducted by others within NAIT. Initiatives such as moving NAIT to a common credit framework and to Outcomes-based Education, investigating and integrating employability/enabling skills into curriculum were started at the Provost and Vice President Academic level and were transitioned to LTC to provide leadership. This position offers leadership in researching emerging practices in education and provides recommendations about adopting practices.
Provincial/national/international leadership - , The Executive Director of LTC actively positions NAIT as a leading polytechnic with Alberta, Canada and the world. The position is also responsible for liaising with educational leaders and other stakeholders to collaboratively lead shared initiatives (for e.g. AIT/NAIT curriculum development projects; NAIT/SAIT strategic alliances), particularly as these relate to the Campus Alberta agenda. It is also responsible for developing and sharing best practices in polytechnic education.
Additionally, the position provides strategic oversight to projects related to the student learning experience such as the impacts of class-size on student success, impacts on student learning when flipping classrooms, and the efficacy of Becoming a Master Instructor.
The position is also responsible for policy development related to learning and teaching at NAIT; the creation of educational quality assurance standards and processes; the creation of formal, technology supported workflow to support staff and student access to learning and teaching services; and the optimization of access to learning and teaching resources through print and digital means.

  • Liaise with external educational leaders and other stakeholders to collaboratively lead shared initiatives (AIT/NAIT curriculum projects; NAIT/SAIT strategic alliance in supporting Teaching excellence, Alberta-wide educational Leaders meetings).
  • Actively position NAIT as a leading polytechnic through overseeing the development, sharing best practices in polytechnic education via print, web, conferences, presentations, the development of white papers, etc.
